Urban Farm Program
Our Urban Farm sites in Lowell grow more than 30,000 pounds of fresh produce each year
At the heart of Mill City Grows is our Urban Farm Program, which produces all the seasonal fruits and vegetables we make available to the community. We use organic practices and work side-by-side with community volunteers to grow fresh food for our Mobile Market, education classes, and local emergency food providers. Our urban farms host educational classes for youth, community groups, and volunteers throughout the growing season.
Mill City Grows’ “Big Farm”
Pawtucketville neighborhood
Our second Urban Farm, affectionately known as the “Big Farm,” was launched in 2014 and is on a four-acre site that we lease from the City of Lowell. This thriving space is where we grow our larger crops and the bulk of our products. A wash and pack station is on site for cleaning and processing harvested produce for our Mobile Market.
Rist Urban Agriculture Greenhouse
and Farm
UMass Lowell East Campus
In 2017, Mill City Grows worked in partnership with UMass Lowell and launched an Urban Agriculture Greenhouse on UML’s East Campus. The site extends the growing season by 4 months and also acts as an education facility for students and faculty. On October 18, 2019, the site was officially dedicated and renamed the Rist Urban Agriculture Greenhouse and Farm in honor of University benefactors, Brian (UML ’77) and Kim Rist.
